The death of a writer means only one thing to his readers: a spring run dry. The death of a writer means an end to a font of imagination, emotions and knowledge. But the death of Naguib Mahfouz is something else. To his readers and professional disciples, Mahfouz was more than just a writer: He was, and is, the Arab novel itself. Before him, there was nothing called the Arab novel; today, thanks to him, there exists a genre to speak of. Writing the novel was a conscious decision for the young Mahfouz. .

BOOK REVIEW: Nureyev's was a life of drama and dance
Rudolf Nureyev's life was dramatic. He was born on a train in Mongolia. (His mother and sisters were joining his father, a soldier in the Red Army.) In his 20s, on tour with the Kirov Ballet, he defected in Paris. His partnership with Margot Fonteyn of London's Royal Ballet is legendary. Afterward, he danced all over the world as a guest star or choreographer. His promiscuity, a penchant for dancing after his prime, and his passing in 1993 from AIDS form the dark side of the drama. In "Nureyev: The Life," journalist and author Julie Kavanaugh puts us in the midst of the people who surrounded Nureyev, supporting or battling him (or both) throughout his career. Kavanaugh had access to his papers, spoke to the key players in this drama, and traveled to Ufa, the town in the western Urals where he grew up.
Supreme Court will hear challenge to campaign finance law amendment
Davis, a Democrat, wanted to commit his fortune in 2006 to challenge Republican incumbent Thomas Reynolds for a congressional seat in upstate New York. Under the millionaire's amendment, Davis and other self-financing candidates must declare their intention to spend more than $350,000 of their own money, which he and others argue gives incumbents valuable intelligence. Davis, a businessman, ultimately spent $1.25 million of his own money, but Reynolds spent more than twice that and beat Davis by 52-48 percent in a heavily Republican district. Davis argues that the campaign finance provisions violate constitutional guarantees of free speech and equal protection. Last August, a Washington-based appellate panel disagreed. "It places no restriction on a candidate's ability to spend unlimited amounts of his personal wealth to communicate his message to voters, nor does it reduce the amount of money he is able to raise from contributors," Judge Thomas Griffith wrote for the U.S.

Official Version of Naval Incident Starts to Unravel
Israelis and their allies in the US administration do not tolerate obstacles - including patriotic US Naval officials who expose their hoaxes. There are a few clear heads remaining in the upper eschelons of the US Armed Forces which have managed to escape the earlier purges of the Rumsfeld-OSP-Wolfowitz-Feith cabal. Admiral Fallon and other like-minded American officers should have their drivers check their cars before starting the engines - the mafia that took us to war in Iraq and is pushing for war with Iran can get very rough. It is disgusting to have this played out again and again and again. They will never be satisfied until they have destroyed all independent nations in the Middle East using American manpower and treasure - and destroying the US economy and Bill of Rights in the process.
