Awaiting Iraq war's end so families may reunite

What do you think when you see the same images day after day? Do you wonder why and try to make a change or turn your head and look away? To question the rationale or reason has often been grounds for treason. Force overriding force, might makes right. Is that what we teach our children when we tuck them in at night?

The funeral parlors and headstone makers have been very busy keeping up with demand. Nearly 4,000 soldiers dead so far with their blood on "The Decider's" hands. How many funerals has he attended? The newspapers say none. Nearly 4,000 soldiers dead so far: 4,000 lost daughters and sons; 4,000 folded flags given to families who will never be the same; 4,000 families weeping for their loved ones whose deaths are such a shame. It isn't much fun to see your friends buried with no end in sight.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS

Runner," but the next generation of the MyVu personal media viewer is meant to improve the experience of watching video on the tiny screen of an iPod. There are two built-in screens - one for each eye - as well as integrated Ultimate Ears earbuds. The resulting output makes the user feel as if he or she is sitting in front of a big screen TV and not on a bus or plane. The addition of a sunglass lens is meant to make them more versatile and, ultimately, make them a little less nerdy looking.

Slugging It Out

But if a gadfly candidate could win 22 against Paul even before the controversies he's brought upon himself with his current presidential run, what could a a real opponent do now? Clearly Paul will have an extraordinary money advantage, but this race is not one he can win with money. His constituents have seen him on the national stage, and will either re-elect him (warts and all) or reject him. No amount of advertising can change most people's views of a politician that they now know extremely well.

Rather, they'll decide whether they want to be represented by the presidential candidate they've seen so much of in the last year, or a traditional, conventional conservative. Unless the Ronulans are willing to move to Texas en masse, he's probably in serious trouble.

TheStar.com | GTA | Slain teen's mother weeps at murder trial

Hung was among the first officers on scene fighting to save the life of 4-year-old Scarlett Chen, who was found drowned in a bathtub in her family's northeast Toronto home on July 12, 2004. The autistic girl's mother, Xuan Peng, 35, is charged with second-degree murder.

Last Sunday, Hung spoke at the funeral of her daughter, Stefanie, a spirited Grade 9 student found dying from multiple stab wounds in a snowbank near her home in the St. Clair Ave. E. and O'Connor Dr. area. A 15-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy, who has since turned 18, have been charged with first-degree murder in Stefanie's death.

What triggered Hung's tears yesterday was a question from prosecutor Kim Motyl, who asked the police officer why it was some moments before she ordered Scarlett's father, David Chen, out of the bathroom where his daughter died.

World trade, poverty and the environment in the age of global ...

We have all sorts of reports on the advantages of remittances, and I think that the advantages they offer to developing countries are one of the key issues. But this is less a criticism than another question that needs to be addressed.

The second comment, which is perhaps more critical, is that insufficient attention is paid to the major obstacles that exist within countries and within regions (1). I agree that the major problem is with the industrialised countries, but beyond that it is clear that there are major impediments to enterprise creation, creative liberalisation. There are problems with insufficient investment in human capital formation. The entrepreneurs in most developing countries are screwed by their own, rather than by international institutions. This is one of the reasons that I was rather upset by the campaign in Dakar (2).

Robertson and Giuliani: A Not-So-Odd Couple

In a two-week span that saw several conservative Christian evangelical leaders finally climb down off the fence and begin spreading their endorsements across the field of Republican Party presidential candidates, it was the unexpected endorsement by one of Christian conservatism's longtime leaders that garnered the most media attention.

When Pat Robertson, the founder and chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network and the man who created and helped make the Christian Coalition a political powerhouse in the Republican Party of the 1990s, recently endorsed former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, he accomplished at least two things: He enhanced Giuliani's standing amongst those evangelicals still paying attention to Robertson -- his CBN "700 Club" draws millions of nightly viewers -- and he injected himself back into the political spotlight.

CREATURE COMFORTS: SCI-FI FANTASIES

NEW YORK is no place to be in "Cloverfield," a modestly budgeted film about a monster who destroys the city (Jan. 18). The film is produced by "Alias' " J.J. Abrams, who steps in as director to steer the 11th "Star Trek" film into space with a young crew on board. Another TV talent stepping behind the camera is "X-Files" creator Chris Carter, who makes his feature directing debut with July's untitled "X-Files" sequel, starring Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES: ROMANTIC COMEDIES

THERE are enough romances on the horizon to keep hearts fluttering -- Patrick Dempsey realizes he loves his friend in "Made of Honor" (May 2); Ryan Reynolds is a divorcing dad in "Definitely, Maybe" (Feb.
