Makati’s generosity to elderly

Makati today can rightly boast of having the countrys best programs for elderly citizens. City hall employees affectionately refer to them as the seorito and seorita citizens of the countrys financial capital because Mayor Jejomar wants to treat them with old-fashioned reverence and affection.

Under Mayor Binay, Makatis elderly citizens enjoy privileges above and beyond those required by the national law.

Seniors can watch movies for free in all cinemas. At city government expense, Makatis seniors get to watch noontime TV variety shows live in the ABS-CBN and GMA studios under Makatis Lakbay Saya ni Lolo at Lola program.

Birthday cakes

The city delivers a cake to their homes on their birthday and golden wedding anniversary; gives those who are poor a midyear and Christmas gift of P1,000 and sponsors free field trips and excursions to museums, historical and scenic sites in Metro Manila and other parts of the country.

Which is better? Not a simple question

Bits of plastic found in the stomachs of Laysan albatrosses at Midway are a prime example.

But paper isn't necessarily the better choice.

Paper bags mean trees were cut down somewhere, and energy expended to transport and manufacture them.

The Energy Information Administration (the statistics arm of the U.S. Department of Energy) says it takes 20 to 40 percent less energy to manufacture plastic grocery bags than paper ones.

Since plastic is lighter, it is more efficient to transport, says the EIA, while the delivery of the same amount of paper would require seven more trucks.

Biodegradable bags made of cornstarch seem like a better choice, but at the same time, they require air and light to break down, which is not likely in a landfill. Growing corn also requires energy that would need to be calculated into its carbon footprint, according to environmentalists.

PM wants mandatory sentences for 'serious' drug crimes

He did not say what offences would fall into that category or how long the sentences would be, but he did not mention marijuana in connection with mandatory sentencing.

He promised new money for drug investigations and prosecutions, bigger campaigns to identify and close drug labs and marijuana grow ops, tougher border enforcement to keep drugs out of the country and more RCMP efforts to seize proceeds of crime

Harper stressed that two-thirds of the money in the strategy would go to programs designed to help addicts quit and raise public awareness of the dangers of drugs. The rest, $21.6 million, would go to enforcement efforts.

Liberal MP Keith Martin, a physician, said the strategy "will be terrible for Canada because it will result in increased drug use, increased crime, increased incarceration rates and increased costs to the taxpayer.

This is an opportunity to do something

We have got to find a way to get RES that small school environment and level of parental involvement. It is not the town environment. St. Mary's parents say "Parental involvement, is the difference."

You want a compromise? How about; We keep the seventh and eighth graders in the county buildings. That would put Milroy way over 300, Arlington at about 200 and Mays at about 230 (don't hold me to these numbers, they vary from year to year and I don't have a breakdown of the number of county students in BRMS.) This would allow RES sixth graders to move to BRMS, which would relieve overcrowding in RES. The proposed redistricting would be minimized or in some cases eliminated. Is this the perfect plan? NO, but it might be a compromise.

I will continue to be optimistic that there are new schools in our students' future, that soon everyone will pass I-STEP, the Pacers will stay out of trouble and win some post-season games, the Colts will win another Super Bowl, and (most of all) this community will come together after this petition process and love each other for our differences.

Once upon such a time my high school football team experienced such a meld of hope and dream. The Terriers returned many starters from a team that had done well. We were recognized early on as the team to beat, and the first several games only encouraged such aspirations. That we lost our starting QB to injury seemed barely to slow us down, although we did lose a game. Still the dream was there. Our second QB was as good as the first, but another player was the heart and soul of that team. Pat Landry was a tight-end and linebacker who also played on the kick off team. He was a ferocious tackler whose bone rattling hits on opponents fired up the defense and the crowd. He was a monster with an irrepressible spirit and an infectious will to win. At mid-season we sat atop the district standings at 4-1, tied with the surprising Eau Gallie Commodores, whom we were to visit next.

Chris Matthews

See Bonus Coverage at foot: "Clinton campaign spent 24 hours slicing and dicing each other."

Could the great irony be that the strong woman won because . . . people felt sorry for her? That's not just some right-wing media critic talking. It's a view emerging from left-wing circles. Apparently the libs are angry that the MSM was too biased towards Obama, so much so that it drove people to Hillary out of spite or sympathy.

Take the comments of Air America host Rachel Maddow during last night's MSNBC election coverage, in a remarkable exchange with Pat Buchanan and Chris Matthews. Who has been singled out for blame by the lefty blogosphere? None other than Matthews himself, who regularly waxed euphoric about Obama, going so far as to claim a week ago that an Obama victory in Iowa would be the greatest story of the century.

Rooms with a view in Harbor Country

New Buffalo's Marina Grand Resort opened in July 2006 right on New Buffalo Harbor, upping the stock in chic shelters in the area known as Harbor Country. Part hotel, part luxury condominium, Marina Grand combines the best of both worlds: There's a concierge desk in the modest lobby, but the rooms are so quiet and private, they feel like home. There's a top-notch tavern adjacent to the hotel, but the suites include fully equipped kitchens and dining areas adequate for hosting a formal meal.

Not to mention location, location, location. Marina Grand is right on the water, a few blocks west of Whittaker Street in the heart of downtown New Buffalo. It's within walking distance of Whittaker Street's dining options and boutiques, the village's main grocery store (if you're putting that kitchen to use) and, of course, the beach.

Snow Day in the Sands of Baghdad

An Iraqi who works for The Associated Press said he woke his wife and children shortly after 7 a.m. to "have a look at this strange thing." He then called his brother and sister and found them awake, also watching the "cotton-like snow drops covering the trees."

For a couple of hours anyway, a city where mortar shells routinely zoom across the Tigris River to the Green Zone became united as one big White Zone. There were no reports of bloodshed during the snowstorm. The snow showed no favoritism as it dusted neighborhoods Shiite and Sunni alike, faintly falling (with apologies to James Joyce) upon all the living and the dead.
