Thompson says radio natural fit for him

Rival Mike Huckabee won the endorsement of New Hampshire's National Education Association, a state affiliate of the nation's largest teachers' union, in that state's primary because he opposes vouchers.

--It is not known what is behind global warming, so the U.S. should not stake its economy on fixing the problem, certainly not without China and India doing the same.

--Compact fluorescent light bulbs may save energy, but their mercury is a health threat. General Electric, a maker of the bulb, says there is more of a health threat from being cut by broken glass from the bulbs than from the small amount of mercury in them.

With the radio's mike on or off, Thompson sends mixed signals about the race.

"This is serious business about serious things," Thompson tells crowds, saying the media's caught up in personality clashes and "other stuff, but I'm not."

Thompson said at a Lady's Island restaurant on Saturday that "it's not my nature and it's not my mission to jump anybody."

But in a couple of breaths, he makes it clear he is the scrapper in the South Carolina race, going after favorite target Huckabee for advocating a national smoking ban in public places and wanting to shut down Guantanomo Bay.

Focus: The Observer Donor for Life campaign

My wife, Catherine, and I have had the odd weekend in Britain, and some places abroad do offer you free dialysis there, if you arrange it in advance, which let us have a lovely holiday in France in 2005. I'd love to visit America, where we have friends, but dialysis over there is so expensive.

'I would like to be a free man and live the life of a normal person - to be free of the deadweight of the machine that's always waiting for you every other day. But then, I'm lucky. I get a hugely positive treatment that could give me 10 more years of life, and costs £35,000 a year to provide, for free. It's utterly fantastic to be kept alive in this way.

'When I was doing my Christmas cards I wrote in some of them, "Dialysis going well - maybe next year for a kidney?" But when I was writing that I was also thinking, "Will I be saying the same thing next Christmas?" It's frustrating not knowing if I'm moving up the waiting list, or if I'm getting close to the zone of finally getting a kidney.

A drummer, A DANCER, and a singer play traditional Egyptian music at a Jesuit center in Minya unlike anything Ive heard before. Having made the trip out here from the US possessed by a cliché yet genuinely felt identity crisis, I found myself in a nation doing some soul searching as well. Was this coincidental, or is this part of a larger pattern? And why is it that both musical and visual folklore are now being explored, revived, redeveloped and repackaged on an unprecedented scale? Is it a local fad inspired by foreign interest the way Sufism has become?

When Im faced with the fact that some of the most popular music videos are taking on traditional Egyptian personas like the fellaha, aalma (folkloric belly dancer), and the Hind-Rostom-type seductress coffee shop waitress to go with songs like the flirtatious Umma Naeema (Mother Naeema) or Mashrabsh El Shay (Dont Drink Tea), Im convinced that the trend isnt simply another excuse to show more skin.

Brown 'Dithering' In Donations Row

Gordon Brown has been accused of "dithering" over the latest Labour funding controversy as embattled Cabinet minister Peter Hain clung to his political career.

Tory leader David Cameron said the Prime Minister should tell the Work and Pensions Secretary to address the issues surrounding his Labour deputy leadership campaign or face the sack.

Mr Hain is defying resignation calls after dismissing suggestions he tried to cover up donations to his failed bid as "absurd" in a statement on Saturday.

But Mr Cameron insisted questions remained over the funding arrangements, suggesting that the Public Policies Forum (PPF), a mysterious think tank via which donations were channelled, could have been a "front". "If he goes on like (Saturday) I think his time will be up," Mr Cameron said.

Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure

Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting.

I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK.

Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little?

Sakhalin Region

Sakhalin Region is spread over 59 islands. It was formed within its present boundaries on January 2, 1947, out of the former Sakhalin Region, Khabarovsk Territory, and territories that became Russian possessions after the victory over Japan in the Second World War. The region includes Sakhalin Island, the adjoining small islands, and the Kuril Islands. It is located on the eastern shores of the Eurasian mainland in the transition zone between the continent and the Pacific Ocean.

Scrapbooking 'rock star' gets drummed off stage

Disgruntled scrapbookers besieged the Creating Keepsakes chat room threatening to cancel subscriptions, boycott and sue. Scrapbooking bloggers called it "Hall of Fame-Gate." They compared it to the performance drug controversies involving baseball player Barry Bonds and track star Marion Jones.

At first, Contes found the uproar amusingly absurd. She replied on her blog. "Apparently, many lives have been destroyed by this catastrophe."

Her post prompted a barrage of responses on message boards on sites such as Scrapsmack and Twopeasinabucket. One message thread about her received more than 1,255 comments.

"I guess her response is 'dignified' if you live in the same trailer park as she does."

She "doesn't have a moral bone in her body."

Mortified and hurt, Contes stopped scrapbooking.
