Swiss Re executive fatally battered daughter to 'drive out devil'

Alberto Izaga, 36, the most senior executive in London for the insurance giant Swiss Re, thought he was on a mission and that there was a struggle between good and evil and the devil, the Old Bailey was told.

Mr Izaga, who had described his daughter Yanire as the "most precious treasure on earth" was rambling for several hours in June last year, after waking up in the early hours of the morning, about how executives were part of a sect and were taking over the financial world and an American film called Bug, about a man who had bugs beneath his skin.

With his terrified wife trying to ring for help, Mr Izaga grabbed his daughter from the nursery he had prepared and shook her before swinging her against the wooden floor.

She set out as she had done every Sunday afternoon for years. She locked her door, turned to the weather, and held the hand rail as she stepped carefully down from the porch. Once on the ground she adjusted her hat on her gray head. As this was a winter day in the Christmas season, a cold day, she also adjusted her coat. Had it been raining, she would have pulled a large lawn and leaf bag, as if it were a poncho, over her head and upper body. Most times she shouldered her hand bag. This day she also shouldered a bulging plastic shopping bag. She walked along the dirt road that would lead her to the paved road that would lead her to the highway. Her only company was her shadow, small and indistinct at her feet. She walked without the deliberate care of someone unfamiliar with the terrain, but neither was her gait quick.

Jon Alter on Monday: Hillary Not Sexy, Obama Had It Sewed Up

No, but I don't think there are a lot of political observers who would give them very good odds right now. They need to reformat their campaign, relaunch it, which we'll see them do later on this week. They've got 18 days before South Carolina, which is plenty of time. There's also the possibility that the pundits are wrong and they'll do much better than expected tomorrow. Let's say that Obama only wins by a few points. The way the expectation game works, that could be seen as almost a victory for Hillary. Or if she were to carry Democrats even if she loses among the independents, they could then carry that forward as an argument. But they've been grasping for a lot of straws the last couple of days and throwing things again the wall, knowing they probably won't stick. Now they're going to, I think in all likelihood, have a series of meetings this week and try to figure out what to do before South Carolina.

In the world of online community, one authoritative man can dictate ...

It was still early morning when Matthew Passmore opened the door of his parents' half-broken minivan and planted his feet on the dusty floor of the New Mexico desert. A smattering of scrub brush grew up from the dirt and rocks, and a lone wooden mailbox rose out of the ground with letter stickers pasted on to form the word "CABINET." .

Radio Talk

The station is mostly appealing to Clear Channel's now killed-off 105.3/The Buzz, but is still throwing in an occasional Guns 'n Roses or Aerosmith cut to appease former 96rockers. Question: is the name Project a good one? Is it the type of name that will last 32 years? Is it cool enough to appeal to the 18-34 male audience they appear to be seeking?

And how about 94.9/The Bull, formerly Lite 94.9? Unlike Project, which is a unique name in the Clear Channel family of stations, the Bull is used at several Clear Channel country stations. The name, introduced in December, conveys masculinity and in-your-face attitude. But the station is supposed to be a female-skewing country music station, according to its execs. And with the addition of the Braves, does the station's name and message vibe with its music? It's obviously too early to say but do you think it works?

Also, let's go back a couple of years to the introduction of rock station Dave, formerly Z93.
