Cornelius Cardew lives

Cornelius Cardew (1936-81) developed a philosophy of experimental notation and indeterminacy that influenced art music throughout the world. He was a deeply moral thinker, engaged in a constant struggle for truth in art, life, the political world, and himself. In face of all criticism and mockery, he stood with his personal, political and aesthetic beliefs against British musical conservatism, the avant-garde establishment, and finally, the experimentalism he himself had created.

University Presses Take Their Stand

While those points express skepticism, another part of the paper suggests a broadening of the open access concept. "Open access need not be limited to journals," the presses state. And while applying the model to monographs would create another set of issues for university presses (the paper notes that only 17-20 percent of publishing costs for monographs are on manufacturing), there might also be models that mix print and online, open access and fees, the paper suggests. It adds that it would be "unwise not to explore the implications of open access for all fields of knowledge lest an unfortunate new ‘digital divide’ should arise between fields and between different types of publishing."

Underlying the specific issues raised, the paper says that university presses could function in open access in the "gift economy" model (in which they aren’t expected to generate revenue streams that would disappear), but that policy makers need to recognize the extent to which this represents a shift from the current model, which even if it includes subsidies, is a market economy.

SFGate: Raiders Silver and Black Blog

A motion penalty, barely visible to the naked eye, erased another Raven smothering on 4th-and-1.

The final stroke of luck was a defensive holding penalty on another fourth-down pass play, negating one more potential Baltimore death blow.

It was an awful call, one of the worst ever to decide a game. NFL refs, incompetent boobs in some cases, never make that call to decide a game.

The Pats still needed to score and they did, even though replays showed that Pats WR Jabbar Gaffney was juggling the ball as he went out of bounds.

True to form, the gutless replay judge did not overturn the call on the field, lest anyone think the worst officials in any sport in any country be put in a negative light.

This lucky escape by the Patriots might have trumped the Tuck Rule game.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS

Runner," but the next generation of the MyVu personal media viewer is meant to improve the experience of watching video on the tiny screen of an iPod. There are two built-in screens - one for each eye - as well as integrated Ultimate Ears earbuds. The resulting output makes the user feel as if he or she is sitting in front of a big screen TV and not on a bus or plane. The addition of a sunglass lens is meant to make them more versatile and, ultimately, make them a little less nerdy looking.

This is an opportunity to do something

We have got to find a way to get RES that small school environment and level of parental involvement. It is not the town environment. St. Mary's parents say "Parental involvement, is the difference."

You want a compromise? How about; We keep the seventh and eighth graders in the county buildings. That would put Milroy way over 300, Arlington at about 200 and Mays at about 230 (don't hold me to these numbers, they vary from year to year and I don't have a breakdown of the number of county students in BRMS.) This would allow RES sixth graders to move to BRMS, which would relieve overcrowding in RES. The proposed redistricting would be minimized or in some cases eliminated. Is this the perfect plan? NO, but it might be a compromise.

I will continue to be optimistic that there are new schools in our students' future, that soon everyone will pass I-STEP, the Pacers will stay out of trouble and win some post-season games, the Colts will win another Super Bowl, and (most of all) this community will come together after this petition process and love each other for our differences.

Which is better? Not a simple question

Bits of plastic found in the stomachs of Laysan albatrosses at Midway are a prime example.

But paper isn't necessarily the better choice.

Paper bags mean trees were cut down somewhere, and energy expended to transport and manufacture them.

The Energy Information Administration (the statistics arm of the U.S. Department of Energy) says it takes 20 to 40 percent less energy to manufacture plastic grocery bags than paper ones.

Since plastic is lighter, it is more efficient to transport, says the EIA, while the delivery of the same amount of paper would require seven more trucks.

Biodegradable bags made of cornstarch seem like a better choice, but at the same time, they require air and light to break down, which is not likely in a landfill. Growing corn also requires energy that would need to be calculated into its carbon footprint, according to environmentalists.

Advertising giant Grey Global re-launches in Cairo by op...

Born in Aswan, Abdel Dhaher has both Nubian and Saeedi roots. Although he left Aswan as a child and came to settle in Cairo, Abdel Dhaher never really left Egypt's most magical city. “My painting style is social realism. I paint the reality of life in the South. I've loved to paint the daily life or the environment in the South ever since I was a student of Fine Arts," he says.

Armed with a sketch pad at all times, Abdel Dhaher quickly draws everything he sees, a zir (water jar), a cousin feeding the chickens, another cousin feeding the ducks, his nephews' double wedding, or the belly dancer and zammar (flute player) at a wedding.

Few people have heard of a Saeedi painter. It's not that Upper Egyptians aren't blessed with artistic talent. They are. It is just that those painters who originally come from Upper Egypt more often than not tend to stray away from their roots and try to become urbanized.

EU faces deadline on GM food ban

In November 2007, the World Trade Organization (WTO) gave the EU an extra two months to comply with its ruling.

The United States, Argentina and Canada brought the case, arguing their farmers lost money because of GM bans, and may now call for WTO sanctions.

The EU has difficulty complying with the ruling, chiefly because of a ban on GM products by Austria.

The European Commission says it has imposed a regulatory framework but acknowledges there are problems enforcing it.

'Protectionism'

In 1998, the EU introduced a moratorium on new biotech authorisations that lasted six years.

The three countries behind the complaint to the WTO argued that the ban was about protectionism rather than science.

There are continuing concerns in France about the safety of GM crops.
