For the current generation of gaming consoles, the Xbox 360 has several reputations. On the positive side, the Xbox 360 is the undisputed leader of online service and multiplayer, but on the negative side, it also holds a track record of being fairly unreliable.

At one point, up to one-third of all Xbox 360 consoles experienced the hardware failure popularly known as the Red Ring of Death, which rendered the console unusable.

In response to the apparent hardware design flaw, Microsoft in June 2007 introduced a revised cooling design with heatpipe and heatsink to cool the GPU. New "Falcon" hardware that would include 65nm chip technology, which was later found to apply only to the CPU, landed in stores last Fall. Hardware to integrate a 65nm GPU, codenamed "Jasper," isn't due until this August.

BOOK REVIEW: Nureyev's was a life of drama and dance

Rudolf Nureyev's life was dramatic. He was born on a train in Mongolia. (His mother and sisters were joining his father, a soldier in the Red Army.) In his 20s, on tour with the Kirov Ballet, he defected in Paris. His partnership with Margot Fonteyn of London's Royal Ballet is legendary. Afterward, he danced all over the world as a guest star or choreographer. His promiscuity, a penchant for dancing after his prime, and his passing in 1993 from AIDS form the dark side of the drama.

In "Nureyev: The Life," journalist and author Julie Kavanaugh puts us in the midst of the people who surrounded Nureyev, supporting or battling him (or both) throughout his career. Kavanaugh had access to his papers, spoke to the key players in this drama, and traveled to Ufa, the town in the western Urals where he grew up.

Only a few ideas will make it to lawbooks

Even a bill languishing on the docket can be useful in convincing voters that a politician labored in Topeka on behalf of common sense and family values and against wasteful spending and bureaucracy.

Plugging away

Hensley said he might contribute to the scrap heap. He will renew sponsorship of a bill prohibiting legislators from lobbying for two years after leaving office. Jeopardizing the income of retired politicians is unpopular, but he is undeterred.

"There ought to be a grace period," Hensley said.

Pyle will mirror that persistence with a proposal to join more than 20 other states in development of a volunteer state defense force that would respond to emergencies. His idea floundered last session, and the proposal is opposed by the Kansas National Guard and the governor.

A Path Worth Taking? The Prospects and Challenges of a U.S.-Taiwan ...

The U.S.-Taiwan FTA would be a visible and specific means of enabling Taiwan to pursue regional integration with its neighbors in the Asia-Pacific.

Madison, Wis.: Hello,

Given the recent allegations of corruption and scandal surrounding the Taiwanese "seemingly" democratic government, wouldn't the US trade undermine attempts to reform once new leaders begin receiving more foreign direct investment?

Carolyn

Mr. Fadah Hsieh and Mr. John Chen-Chung Deng: Deng: I don't agree that Taiwan is a "seemingly"democratic government. Its leaders are directly elected by its people. Taiwan is a fully-fledged democratic country that has delivered prosperity to its people, as indicated by President Bush on Nov.

George Bush calls Iran 'leading terror sponsor'

While naval leaders briefed the president that the encounter was "deadly serious," the respected Navy Times newspaper reported that a ham radio operator known as Filipino Monkey, not the Iranians, could have issued the provocative threat.

As the Iranian boats "swarmed" the US patrol, radio operators intercepted a warning: "I am coming to you. You will explode after a couple of minutes."

Jeffery James, commander of one of the vessels involved, the destroyer USS Hopper, said the source of the threat was less important than its timing and the Iranians behaviour. He said: "Whether it was coincidental or not, it occurred at exactly the same time that these boats were around us and they were placing objects in the water so the threat appeared to be building."

But an official in Teheran called on the US to apologise for a failed attempt to "fool" its allies.

Smokers Protest Illinois Smoking Ban

The Eagles Hall in Benton, IL was once a smokers paradise; not anymore. "They took our of our basic rights away. I don't want them taking anymore away," says Mohr. He used to enjoy smoking two packs a day with ease. "When I can't smoke especially at work, I'm eating constantly so I don't need to do that." These frustrations. . . prompted him to start the petition.Mohr says his motivation isn't all about habit, it's more about personal freedoms. So far, 3,500 people have signed his petition. Along with personal freedoms, Illinois Restaurant owners say the smoking ban is bad for business. At Sandy's Bar & Grill in Benton, the manager says they've lost about 30%. "They're either not coming in at all, or they come in to pick up an order to take out," says the manager, Kelly Mandrell. Tips for Eagles Club bar tender, Carol Scott, are down $40.00 a night. "It hurts," she says. But Illinois lawmakers are hoping this ban will save lives. It's predicted the ban will drop lung cancer cases in Illinois by 19% and heart attacks by 8%.

The Footnote Police vs. Ward Churchill

The University of Colorado committee investigating Ward Churchill has found him guilty, guilty, guilty. And on some level, they're right: Churchill is guilty of occasionally shoddy scholarship and the dubious practice of ghostwriting, and perhaps even more. But we should be alarmed by the investigative committee's report, and not merely because the committee exists only because of a concerted effort to fire Churchill for his obnoxious and idiotic comments about 9/11 victims.
