While the F-22 is supreme on the enemy's side of the forward edge of battle area (FEBA), over friendly territory, the F-15 has a lot to recommend it, including a potentially larger missile payload. So, I could see how with the retirement of about 200-300 F-15s, the Air Force would be ideally positioned to reinstate its original fighter roadmap. It will be interesting to see whether, in light of increased Russian excursions over the North Sea, the RAF decides to retain its Tornado F.2s even after acquiring the Eurofighter Typhoon. When it comes to long-range intercept and beyond visual range capability, the Tornado has it all over the Eurofighter. And with the final block of upgrades, it finally becomes the fighter it should have been from the beginning. Posted by Stuart Koehl at 11:01 AM | Permalink | E-mail the author | E-mail article .
Jeff Thelen's Blog
Hi everybody. I'm back from really slacking off from the blog over the holidays. This week, it's just a few random thoughts. How many people are sick at your home, office or school? Seems like everyone in this newsroom is fighting some sort of bug right now. My symptoms are a sore throat, tiredness and aches and pains. I have no congestion, but my nose only runs at night. Wierd, isn't it? Alison Struve blows her nose so much she sounds like a foghorn. Stephanie Luisier and chief photographer Randy Bise both have that "sick sound" when they talk. Was it just me or did the Badgers seem a little unfocused and unprepared for their bowl game? Perhaps it's the long layoff between their last regular season game and the contest on January 1. It was a sort of a fun game to watch, even if it was rather sloppily played.
Gadgets Eureka Aerospace Uses Microwave Beams to Stop Cars
High-speed police chases are nothing new to Americans these days. Local (and often times national) TV stations are quick to break into regular programming when a high speed chase occurs and will follow the incident to its completion. TV stations know that people are keen to tune in -- just as they are likely to slow down and rubberneck for an accident on the side of the highway. Criminals and TV stations alike may have something to fear in the future thanks to Eureka Aerospace. Eureka's contraption has nothing to do with the "PIT Maneuver" or spike strips -- instead, it uses microwaves to effectively zap a cars electrical system rendering it inoperable. The rooftop mounted device in its current version measures 5' x 3' by 1' and weighs roughly 200 pounds. The high-powered weapon operates at 300 MHz and is not harmful to humans.
Makati’s generosity to elderly
Makati today can rightly boast of having the countrys best programs for elderly citizens. City hall employees affectionately refer to them as the seorito and seorita citizens of the countrys financial capital because Mayor Jejomar wants to treat them with old-fashioned reverence and affection. Under Mayor Binay, Makatis elderly citizens enjoy privileges above and beyond those required by the national law. Seniors can watch movies for free in all cinemas. At city government expense, Makatis seniors get to watch noontime TV variety shows live in the ABS-CBN and GMA studios under Makatis Lakbay Saya ni Lolo at Lola program. Birthday cakes The city delivers a cake to their homes on their birthday and golden wedding anniversary; gives those who are poor a midyear and Christmas gift of P1,000 and sponsors free field trips and excursions to museums, historical and scenic sites in Metro Manila and other parts of the country.
NOON EDITION: Broadway takes a break, delays at airports, and stocking ...
Broadway producers and stagehands talked through the night, but adjourned at 7 this morning with no agreement in place to end the 16-day strike. Spokesmen for both sides said the parties will take a 12-hour break and return to the bargaining table at 7 tonight. Neither side will have further comment, said Local 1 spokesman Bruce Cohen. As the strike entered its third week, representatives for the League of American Theatres and Producers, the nonprofit representing management, and Local 1 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees negotiated for almost 24 straight hours, beginning Sunday morning. The two are trying to find common ground to end the strike, which began Nov. 10 and has shuttered 26 plays and musicals. Peggy McGlone/The Star-Ledger .
Congress: Incremental Reform, Trafficking
A USA Today/Gallup Poll conducted July 6-8, 2007 reported that over 60 percent of respondents considered illegal immigration very or extremely important (www.pollingreport.com/immigration.htm). An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll done June 8-11, 2007 found respondents evenly divided over whether immigration helps the US more than it hurts the US. However, large majorities favor new fines on employers who hire illegal immigrants and more fences and agents on the Mexico-US border. A majority of respondents opposed giving unauthorized foreigners who paid fines and satisfied other requirements legal immigrant status. At the same time, a majority also agreed that it is not realistic to deport most of the unauthorized foreigners in the US. Los Angeles police confronted a group of Spanish-speaking demonstrators in MacArthur Park calling for legalization in May 2007, resulting in casualties.
Blacks Turning on Clintons?
Several prominent black leaders are assailing Bill and Hillary Clinton for their use of racially insensitive language in their campaign against Barack Obama, Ben Smith reports for The Politico. A series of comments from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, her husband and her supporters are spurring a racial backlash and adding a divisive edge to the presidential primary as the candidates head south to heavily African-American South Carolina. The comments, which ranged from the New York senator appearing to diminish the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement — an aide later said she misspoke — to Bill Clinton dismissing Sen. Barack Obama's image in the media as a “fairy tale" — generated outrage on black radio, black blogs and cable television. And now they've drawn the attention of prominent African-American politicians.
