Spirits, sacred stones - and how to dowse your aura

In the bright docks of Ilfracombe, the sturdy MS Oldenburg rocked in the harbour as beefy men packed rucksacks and provisions into large plastic containers and dragged them aboard. After collecting my ticket in the harbour master's office, I felt a tap on my shoulder. The striking appearance of my guide, Lawrence Main, should not perhaps have come as a surprise, considering the nature of his interests, but he was monolithically tall and tanned with sea-blue eyes glinting from the depths of a wild grey mane of dreadlocks and the white horses of his long beard. He looked like Neptune or an Indian sadhu, albeit one in tiny shorts, a red fleece, sandals and bum bag.

As chairman of the mysterious Society of Ley Hunters, he had invited The Observer along on one of their annual holidays, to celebrate May Day on the island of Lundy off the north coast of Devon, in the hope this coverage would attract new members who share their passion for dowsing and stone circles.

Romantic novelists out of love over plagiarism

Cruel words and harsh accusations have darkened the world of romantic fiction after a popular American novelist was accused of plagiarism.

Cassie Edwards is the world's most successful author of American Indian historical romance novels, with more than 10 million copies of her 99 books in print.

However, the author of Wild Abandon, Savage Longings and Rapturous Rendezvous, is having her literary output subjected to the unwelcome attentions of readers who are uninterested in the exploits of amorous Cheyenne braves.

Fighting delinquency is now a national priority and a duty," Calderon said.

Bloodshed continuesHe has made the crackdown on Mexico's drug gangs a cornerstone of his 13-month-old administration. But while the campaign has scored some notable successes including the seizure of more than 40 tons of U.S.-bound cocaine and other narcotics it so far has failed to stanch the bloodshed.

Two federal police officers were killed Tuesday night in an ambush by suspected drug traffickers in Reynosa, on the Rio Grande near McAllen. On Monday, soldiers and police killed three suspected narco-gunmen in Rio Bravo, a small city 12 miles down river from Reynosa.

Despite the dispatch of thousands of police and soldiers to several violence-plagued areas last year, underworld rivalries killed more than 2,500 people across Mexico, about the same as in prior years.

The Case of a Lifetime

Benitez as second chair, the legal team set out to develop new arguments about the real-world benefits of affirmative action, rather than relying on the idealism of social justice. The litigators assembled a massive body of evidence from psychologists, demographers, sociologists, educators, and historians."We presented concrete data on the benefits of diversity in education," Ms. Benitez says. "The experts came together, all to tell the story of how diversity helps all students."The court quickly grasped the argument. In her opinion for the majority, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor wrote: "These benefits are not theoretical but real, as major American businesses have made clear that the skills needed in today's increasingly global marketplace can only be developed through exposure to widely diverse people, cultures, ideas, and viewpoints."One example of the arguments presented by Ms.

The CD has not left the building

This year began with good news for the beleaguered record industry. In the crucial sales week between Christmas and new year, 3m songs were legally downloaded in Britain, twice as many as in the same last gasp of 2006. But among the figures released by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) was one the digital lobby would probably prefer to have buried. Of all albums sold in 2007, less than 5% were downloads. In the albums market, digital has made barely any inroads. The media may herald the death of CDs, but consumers seem wedded to the shiny silver discs.

"The media’s obsession with downloads creates the impression that there is only a digital market for music," says Matt Philips, the BPI’s director of communications. "That is not the case. Singles, certainly, have been revolutionised by legal digital services, but with albums, most people still prefer a physical product.

Androphilia: Replacing gay identity for real men

Kiss those gay bars and gay pride parades good-bye as a new generation of homosexual men rise to empower themselves away from stereotypes evolved out of the infamous Stonewall riots of June 1969. The time is right to define a new identity said author Jack Malebranche of Portland, OR.

Androphilia: A Manifesto Rejecting the Gay Identity, Reclaiming Masculinity, written by Jack Malebranche describes the "gay lifestyle" as one that replaced true masculinity with self-loathing, perpetual victim hood, effeminacy, and overall a synthetic approach to life.

Homosexual desires are not fixed-oriented or a sexual fetish, but Malebranche, 32, declares it is simply put: The love of men. It is time for homosexual men to break away from a "politically charged gay community that does not represent their interests or values," he said and suggested men reject any notion that limits male identity," and reclaim their rightful place among the brotherhood of men.
