| England a fleeting memory for Gavin McCann
There is a Premiership footballer, demonstrating his robust skills before the lenses of the world, who would prefer a profile so low you almost need to lift up the carpet to find him. In pics: Premier League actionPremier League Transfer TalkBolton Wanderers homepage | Fans' forumGavin McCann was plucked from Sunderland's midfield in Sven-Goran Eriksson's first England squad, played, but was never seen again. He has moved through Everton, Sunderland and Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers with aggregate transfer fees approaching £4 million but concedes that even if Fabio Capello springs a similar surprise, it is unlikely to be to this most modest of footballers that he turns. .
Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev
Officials of the Zavorovo state farm near Moscow had prepared carefully for the big day last August. They had even built a special staircase to spare their distinguished visitor the indignity of climbing down a hill to the potato fields below the main road. Mikhail Gorbachev would have none of it. Stepping out of his ZIL limousine, he gave the staircase a dismissive wave and scrambled down the steep incline in his neatly pressed gray business suit, leaving his surprised entourage to run after him in full view of television cameras. At the bottom of the hill, Gorbachev asked the farmers, lined up beside their equipment like soldiers on parade, about the mood on the farm. "Good. Businesslike," came the replies. Gorbachev was not satisfied. "I always hear the same answer," he said. "[But] there are always problems." For example, he asked, was everything available "except for vodka," a teasing reference to his antialcoholism campaign.
Walking back to happiness
'Ooh, that'll be OK, it's not on the pavement, it's inside a tidy green box.' I hate them. They're always doing it. I despise them. I may hang a bucket of cold bathwater in the tree over the recycling bin, which I can operate with a piece of string running through my front window. I'd be prepared to hide there for a good eight hours, just to soak the next bastard Hampstead hypocrite who crumples his empty foil bag of Terence Stamp root vegetable crisps into my paper-only box. I could feel my stress levels rising as I fished the rubbish out. Then I had to walk along the street carrying it. That was depressing, so I dropped it into the recycling bin at number 12. Now I felt better. A nice walk along a quiet, leafy street! I say 'quiet'. That's if you don't count the incessant yammering of drills, chainsaws and cement mixers.

Reviews in: 'Mermaid" fish-fried, but Denver's Boggess praised
They made it clear after Denver that despite universal panning of the show's book, costumes and bizarre set design, no major changes would be made for New York. The only appreciable difference Thursday was the addition of a third tyke to the rotating role of Flounder. The newcomer, Brian D'Addario, performed for critics. Tepid critical response to Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," "Aida" and even "Mary Poppins" had no negative impact on ticket sales. And if ever a Broadway musical were built to survive critics' sabers, it's "The Little Mermaid." The show sold virtually every available seat for its Denver run and even when the show was in its pre-opening Broadway preview period, it shattered box-office records at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Its $1.3 million gross in ticket sales for the week ending Dec.
Father Foley Cape Cod abuse case settled For $550,000
The Archdiocese of Hartford agreed this week to pay $550,000 to a man who accused the Rev. Stephen Foley of using his position as Hartford County fire chaplain to sodomize him when he was a 14-year-old parishioner in Windsor Locks. Foley, who has been accused of abuse by at least 11 men since 1993 and was removed from public ministry in 2002, is still affiliated with the county fire organization he belonged to when the alleged assault occurred. He now holds the title of "chaplain emeritus" of the group, according to board members... The current president of the group is Windsor Locks Fire Chief Gary Ruggiero. Haber said Ruggiero sent an e-mail to the board of directors Friday criticizing the newspaper for publishing a story last Sunday that exposed Foley's continued use of a police-equipped Crown Victoria with flashing lights, sirens and scanners... abuse took place on a weekend when the boy and his friend accompanied Foley to a home on Cape Cod, which Foley said was owned by his aunt, the brief said.
