EU faces deadline on GM food ban

In November 2007, the World Trade Organization (WTO) gave the EU an extra two months to comply with its ruling.

The United States, Argentina and Canada brought the case, arguing their farmers lost money because of GM bans, and may now call for WTO sanctions.

The EU has difficulty complying with the ruling, chiefly because of a ban on GM products by Austria.

The European Commission says it has imposed a regulatory framework but acknowledges there are problems enforcing it.

'Protectionism'

In 1998, the EU introduced a moratorium on new biotech authorisations that lasted six years.

The three countries behind the complaint to the WTO argued that the ban was about protectionism rather than science.

There are continuing concerns in France about the safety of GM crops.

We have Christians that are members of liberal-leftist groups, Communist groups, conservative groups and the NDP. It's only a display of the diversity of their political beliefs."

Finding the right balanceJust as moderate Islamist movements have been successful in earning government recognition in several Arab countries including Jordan, Yemen, Morocco and Tunisia, Madi says he believes in his chances of not only gaining government approval, but effecting change in the political arena. He need look no further afield than Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina for inspiration, but change will come only if he can attract a base of real support —something even stalwart parties such as Al-Wafd seem unable to do today.

Rumor found untrue at JCHS

Officials at Jefferson City School District are trying to quell another rumor of possible violence at a school.

According to School District Spokesman David Luther, around noon Thursday, one student at the high school spoke to another student and word eventually came to principals that there might be a weapon in the building."Our principals got enough information to do a search and went through several book bags and eventually the principals were satisfied that the rumor was false," he said. "Classes were never disrupted and students went about their normal activities."Acting principal Delinda Fitch also noted that students were very cooperative and understanding of the situation.Earlier this week the district put out a release to quell rumors about a threat written on a bathroom wall at Thomas Jefferson Middle School last week.

Advertising giant Grey Global re-launches in Cairo by op...

Born in Aswan, Abdel Dhaher has both Nubian and Saeedi roots. Although he left Aswan as a child and came to settle in Cairo, Abdel Dhaher never really left Egypt's most magical city. “My painting style is social realism. I paint the reality of life in the South. I've loved to paint the daily life or the environment in the South ever since I was a student of Fine Arts," he says.

Armed with a sketch pad at all times, Abdel Dhaher quickly draws everything he sees, a zir (water jar), a cousin feeding the chickens, another cousin feeding the ducks, his nephews' double wedding, or the belly dancer and zammar (flute player) at a wedding.

Few people have heard of a Saeedi painter. It's not that Upper Egyptians aren't blessed with artistic talent. They are. It is just that those painters who originally come from Upper Egypt more often than not tend to stray away from their roots and try to become urbanized.

Striking Writers Reach Deal With UA

Striking Hollywood writers have reached a deal with Tom Cruise's production outfit United Artists Films to resume working while the strike continues against other studios.

The deal announced Monday was the first reached with big-screen producers by the Writers Guild of America, which has been on strike since Nov. 5. Terms were not disclosed.

"United Artists has lived up to its name. UA and the writers guild came together and negotiated seriously. The end result is that we have a deal that will put people back to work," said Patric M. Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America, West.

The guild said the agreement addresses key issues of writers, who walked off the job over their cut of potential profits from programming on the Internet and other new media.

July 2006

Mom would try to let Dad get a couple of hours of sleep before the long drive from Ohio to the Cape.

We would normally leave late and drive through the night and get to the Cape around noonish. We tried to stop once and that was a disaster as no one sleep and it was a waste of money. Even into my years of driving, we have done the same. Only now that it is just my wife and I we do try to find a place to stop over night to and from.

Personally I would rather get there and have more time for the Cape. But I am learning to take things a little easier now that the kids are not along for the ride. The only night with more anticipation was Christmas Eve, we couldn’t sleep, we didn’t want to sleep, we just wanted to go. We wanted to get to the beach.

This year is a little different, with us changing to a September visit, I almost feel a little anxiety.
