Hung was among the first officers on scene fighting to save the life of 4-year-old Scarlett Chen, who was found drowned in a bathtub in her family's northeast Toronto home on July 12, 2004. The autistic girl's mother, Xuan Peng, 35, is charged with second-degree murder. Last Sunday, Hung spoke at the funeral of her daughter, Stefanie, a spirited Grade 9 student found dying from multiple stab wounds in a snowbank near her home in the St. Clair Ave. E. and O'Connor Dr. area. A 15-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy, who has since turned 18, have been charged with first-degree murder in Stefanie's death. What triggered Hung's tears yesterday was a question from prosecutor Kim Motyl, who asked the police officer why it was some moments before she ordered Scarlett's father, David Chen, out of the bathroom where his daughter died.
Whole Grains Found to Stabilize Blood Sugar For up to Ten Hours
(NewsTarget) When eaten as part of a breakfast with a low glycemic index, whole grains can help control blood sugar all day long, according to a study conducted at Lund University in Sweden. A breakfast with a low glycemic index even appeared to improve alertness and mental function. Anne Nilsson of the Unit for Applied Nutrition and Food Chemistry tested the effects of four different types of whole grains and found that in a low glycemic index breakfast, whole grains regulated the body's blood sugar for up to 10 hours. The study suggested that the same effect could be gained from eating whole grains before bed. Nilsson found that of the four grains tested, barley had the best effect on the body. Breads demonstrated a better effect than a hot cereal such as oatmeal.
BOOK REVIEW: Nureyev's was a life of drama and dance
Rudolf Nureyev's life was dramatic. He was born on a train in Mongolia. (His mother and sisters were joining his father, a soldier in the Red Army.) In his 20s, on tour with the Kirov Ballet, he defected in Paris. His partnership with Margot Fonteyn of London's Royal Ballet is legendary. Afterward, he danced all over the world as a guest star or choreographer. His promiscuity, a penchant for dancing after his prime, and his passing in 1993 from AIDS form the dark side of the drama. In "Nureyev: The Life," journalist and author Julie Kavanaugh puts us in the midst of the people who surrounded Nureyev, supporting or battling him (or both) throughout his career. Kavanaugh had access to his papers, spoke to the key players in this drama, and traveled to Ufa, the town in the western Urals where he grew up.
Noli asked to intervene in death of Pinoy hairdresser in Dubai
However, no reports were provided to Sally's kin or to the Philippine Embassy in Dubai. Emy deplored the way an employee, whom she later identified as Alex Emam, gave them the run-around when they went to the DFA last Nov. 22 to verify the report on Sally's death. She said Emam instructed them to fill up a form and advised them to wait for feedback on their inquiry. Emy said they informed Emam that they were checking on her brother after receiving information that he was found dead. She said Emam asked them, "Ito ba ‘yong napukpok sa ulo? (Is this the one who's head was bashed?)," much to their surprise. When they tried to clarify his reply, Emam, according to Emy, brushed them aside, raising suspicion that there was foul play in her brother's death.
The Green Kitchen: Risotto under pressure
Vent the steam immediately, remove lid. Stir. Leave with lid slightly ajar to finish cooking for 2-3 minutes. Tough, eh? Sometimes, saving fossil-fuel energy means saving your own energy, too. If you think that bit of verdancy is easy, check out this. Ages ago, my friend and colleague Aggie MacKenzie told me you can cook pasta as follows. Bring water to the boil, put in pasta, stir and bring back to the boil, cover the pot and turn the heat off. The pasta, she said, would be ready in the time specified on the packet. I didn’t get round to trying Aggie’s method till my hands fell upon a copy of a new book called 50 Ways to Save Water & Energy by Siân Berry (Kyle Cathie, £5.99). Ms Berry uses the same method, and that reminded me to try it on some penne.
New Salvos on Affirmative Action
The data reveal large differences in grades and standardized test scores, and indicate that black applicants are much more likely to be admitted, even with lower grades and test scores. These are the sort of data that have been influential in other states that have considered — and passed — statewide bans on affirmative action. "The people of Michigan have a right to know the extent to which discrimination is taking place," said Roger Clegg, president of the Center for Equal Opportunity, which is releasing the data today and planning a series of events in Michigan to publicize the figures. David Waymire, a spokesman for One United Michigan, which is leading the fight against the referendum, said that the data being released were "worthless" because they did not include breakdowns by economic class.
